Permits & rules
Do I need a permit to remove a tree on my own property in Darwin?+
Generally not, if the tree is wholly on your private residential block. There are exceptions though: heritage-listed trees, trees on the council verge, and clearing native vegetation on larger or rural land can all have rules attached. Before we start any job we check whether anything applies to your tree, so you don't get caught out. If in doubt, give us a call and we'll talk you through it.
Can I remove or prune the tree on my verge / nature strip?+
The City of Darwin treats verge vegetation as council property, so you need council permission before removing a verge tree — and council takes a conservative approach to removing healthy trees. Homeowners are expected to keep overhanging vegetation trimmed so footpaths and sightlines stay clear. If your verge tree is causing problems, we can help you understand your options and what council is likely to need.
Do I need approval to clear my rural block in Litchfield?+
Litchfield landholders can generally clear up to 1 hectare of native vegetation without approval. Clearing more than 1 hectare generally needs a Development Permit under the NT Planning Scheme. It's worth checking before you start, because penalties can apply. We clear blocks across the rural area and can talk you through the process when we quote.
Do I need a permit to burn green waste on my rural property?+
Yes. You need a permit from NT Fire and Rescue Service before burning green waste in the rural area. Permits are generally available in the wet season, not the dry, when fire risk is high. Many landholders find it easier to have us chip the green waste instead — it's quicker, cleaner and gives you mulch for the garden.
Are any trees in Darwin heritage-protected?+
Yes, some individual trees and sites in Darwin are heritage-listed, particularly in older areas and around historic sites. Heritage trees can't be removed or significantly pruned without approval. If you think your tree might be significant, we'll check before any work starts. Call Danny on 08 7918 6018 if you're unsure.
Cost & quotes
How much does tree removal cost in Darwin?+
Every job is different. Price depends on the size of the tree, access to the yard, how close it is to the house or powerlines, how many trees there are, whether you want stump grinding, and green waste removal. That's why we give free, fixed quotes rather than guesses over the phone. [OWNER TO ADD "FROM" PRICE] Call us for an accurate price.
How much does tree lopping or pruning cost?+
Pruning and lopping costs depend on the tree's size, how much is coming off, access, and how many trees you want done. Doing several trees in one visit is usually better value. We'll give you a clear fixed quote with no surprises. [OWNER TO ADD "FROM" PRICE]
Is the quote free and how fast can you come out?+
Yes, quotes are always free and no-obligation. We aim to quote within 24 hours — often the same day. For urgent or storm-damage jobs, call Danny directly on 08 7918 6018 rather than using the form.
Does the price include green waste removal and clean-up?+
Yes. Our quotes include chipping and removing the green waste and a full clean-up — raking, blowing and leaving your yard tidy. If you'd like to keep the mulch or firewood, just let us know.
Is stump grinding included in tree removal?+
Stump grinding is quoted as an optional extra so you can choose. If you want to re-turf, plant or build over the spot, we recommend adding it — it also removes a food source for termites.
Cyclone season & storms
When is cyclone season in Darwin and when should I prune my trees?+
Cyclone season in the NT officially runs from 1 November to 30 April. The best time to prune is during the dry season or the build-up, before the first storms arrive. Bookings get busy once the weather turns, so get in early.
Which trees are most dangerous in a cyclone?+
Dead and termite-hollowed trees, top-heavy trees with dense canopies, trees with included bark or split trunks, and large palms close to houses are the biggest risks. Fast-growing species with weak wood, like African mahogany, are also known for dropping limbs. We'll point out any risks when we quote.
Should I cut my tree down before cyclone season or just prune it?+
Most healthy trees just need pruning — thinning the canopy and removing weak limbs reduces wind load a lot. Trees that are dead, hollow, leaning badly or structurally unsound are usually better removed. We'll give you an honest recommendation, not just the bigger job.
A tree fell on my house/car/fence in a storm — what do I do?+
Stay clear of the tree and anything it's touching. If powerlines are involved, call Power and Water on 1800 245 090 and don't go near it. Take photos for your insurance claim. Then call Danny on 08 7918 6018 and we'll get there as quickly as we can.
Will my home insurance cover tree removal after a storm?+
Many home insurance policies cover removing a tree that has damaged your home or another insured structure, but every policy is different. Check with your insurer. We can provide photos and a detailed invoice to support your claim.
Can you help with clean-up after a cyclone like Tropical Cyclone Fina?+
Yes. Tropical Cyclone Fina in November 2025 brought down many trees across Darwin, and we're ready to help with clean-ups after future events — removing fallen trees, making damaged trees safe and clearing debris.
Powerlines
Who is responsible for trees near the powerline to my house?+
Property owners are responsible for keeping trees clear of their service line — the line from the pole to the house. Never trim near powerlines yourself; electricity can arc to branches and tools. Call us and we'll explain what can be done safely.
What if a tree is touching the main street powerlines?+
Contact Power and Water. Their contractors manage clearance around network lines on the road reserve. If a line is down, stay well away and call 1800 245 090.
Neighbours
Can I cut branches overhanging from my neighbour's tree?+
Generally you can trim branches that overhang your boundary, but it's always best to talk to your neighbour first. Avoid damaging the tree's overall health. We can quote to trim both sides at once.
My neighbour's tree is dangerous — what can I do?+
Start by talking to your neighbour and sharing your concerns. If that doesn't work, your local council may be able to advise. We can provide an assessment of the tree's condition to help the conversation.
Trees, palms & lopping
What's the difference between tree lopping and tree pruning?+
Lopping traditionally means cutting branches back to stubs or topping a tree. Pruning to Australian Standard AS 4373 means making correct cuts back to a branch collar or suitable lateral. Proper pruning keeps trees healthy and safer in storms.
Is tree lopping bad for trees?+
Hard lopping or topping is — it causes rot and weak regrowth that snaps in storms. Reducing a tree with correct cuts isn't. When you ask us for lopping, we do it the right way.
When is the best time of year to prune trees in Darwin?+
The dry season and build-up are best, before cyclone season starts on 1 November. Fruit trees like mangos are best pruned after fruiting.
Can you remove coconuts / de-nut palm trees?+
Yes. We de-nut coconut palms and remove dead fronds and seed pods. Once or twice a year is usually enough, and always before cyclone season.
How do I know if my tree has termites or is unsafe?+
Look for mud leads on the trunk, hollow sounds, soft or crumbling wood, cracks, fungus, new lean or dead branches. If you spot any of these, get us to take a look.
Can tree roots damage my house, pipes or driveway?+
Yes. Roots can lift paths and driveways, crack slabs and get into older pipes. Removing the tree and grinding the stump usually solves it.
My mango tree is too big — can it be pruned back without killing it?+
Yes. Mangos respond well to proper pruning. We usually prune after fruiting and reduce height gradually.
How long does a tree removal take?+
Most residential removals take a few hours. Big trees, tight access or multiple trees can take a full day.
Can you remove a tree with no side access or in a tight backyard?+
Yes. We climb and dismantle the tree in sections, lowering pieces by rope to protect your house, fence and pool.
Are you insured?+
Yes, we're fully insured. [ADD INSURANCE DETAILS IF DESIRED]
Rules can change — always check with your local council or Power and Water if unsure. We're happy to help you work it out when we quote.
